Bhutan experiences four distinct seasons, each offering a unique perspective:
• Weather: Pleasant temperatures, clear skies initially, with occasional showers later in the season. Valleys are lush and green.
• Highlights: This is a peak season. Rhododendrons and other wildflowers are in full bloom, painting the hillsides in vibrant colours. Ideal conditions for trekking at lower and mid-altitudes. Paro Tshechu, one of the country's largest festivals, usually occurs during this time. Excellent visibility for Himalayan views early in the season.
• Considerations: Popular time, so booking well in advance is crucial. Can be busier at major sites.
• Weather: Monsoon season brings heavier rainfall, particularly in the afternoons and evenings. Temperatures are warmer, and valleys are exceptionally green and verdant. Mornings can often be clear.
• Highlights: Fewer tourists mean a more intimate experience at cultural sites. Landscapes are incredibly lush and vibrant. Ideal for those interested in botany or seeking lower tour prices (though SDF remains constant). Some smaller, local festivals may occur.
• Considerations: Mountain views can be obscured by clouds. Trekking at higher altitudes is generally not recommended due to rain and leeches. Some road travel might be affected by rain, though major routes usually remain open.
• Weather: Considered the best time to visit by many. Skies are generally clear, offering crisp air and excellent visibility. Temperatures are moderate and pleasant.
• Highlights: Another peak season. Superb conditions for trekking at all altitudes, with stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas. Rice paddies turn golden, creating beautiful landscapes. Several major festivals, including Thimphu Tshechu, take place during autumn.
• Considerations: Like spring, this is a popular season requiring advance booking. Major sites can be crowded.
• Weather: Days are typically sunny and cool/cold, especially at higher elevations. Nights can be very cold. Snowfall is common in the higher regions, potentially closing high mountain passes temporarily. Southern regions remain milder.
• Highlights: Crystal-clear skies often provide the best Himalayan views of the year. Fewer tourists offer a peaceful experience. Ideal for cultural tours in the western valleys (Paro, Thimphu, Punakha). Opportunity to see the rare Black-necked Cranes in the Phobjikha Valley (typically Nov-Feb).
• Considerations: High-altitude treks are generally closed due to snow and cold. Pack warm clothing. Some higher road passes (like Chele La) may be temporarily inaccessible.
For Trekkers: Autumn (Sep-Nov) and Spring (Mar-May) offer the best conditions.
